Los Cabos a breeding ground for humpback whales

Los Cabos a breeding ground for humpback whales

It’s that time again!
January through March is peak season for the annual migration of humpback whales in Cabo San Lucas.
Humpback whales frequent Baja during the winter months for mating and nursery but of course the open ocean is always full of adventures. You can see all the other pelagic species, all sorts of wildlife and at the same time enjoy the splendid scenery around the coast of Los Cabos.
Humpback can be found in most oceans and are well known for their extensive migrations which are some of the longest documented for any mammal species (over 8000 km in one direction). They migrate from their feeding grounds in polar waters to their breeding grounds in tropical waters. Why do they undertake these long migrations? Scientists are still debating why, but it is most likely to take advantage of the high productivity in the Arctic/Antarctic waters and the energy-conserving properties of warm tropical waters.
Humpback Whales are the noisiest and most-imaginative of whales when it comes to song. They sing complex & beautiful ballads that last for between 10 and 20 minutes and can be heard more than 20 miles away. While both male and female Humpback Whales can produce sounds, only males appear to sing songs with distinct themes and melodies.
Humpbacks are uniparous, in other words they give birth to just one baby at a time twins are very rare, less than 1% of births.
Blow, sound, mate and calve in their natural habitat is an awe-inspiring experience that will never be forgotten!
We offer daily morning and sunset Humpback Whale watching Pelagic Safari’s.
