Pelagic Safari at “Conservation of Marine Ecosystems in Mexico: Towards the World Oceans Summit,” Forum

Because we care about the health of our oceans.

Yesterday we were invited to the first Forum in Mexico where scientists, conservationists, politicians, and fisheries came together at the Senate of the Republic.

This Forum is called “Conservation of Marine Ecosystems in Mexico: Towards the World Oceans Summit,” organized by the Senate, Codemar, Beta. The Forum was lead by Ninfa Salinas Sada, president of the Enviromental Comission and Natural Resources, who opened with a deep thought… Oceans, seas and coastal areas form an essential component of the marine ecosystem; but they are constantly threatened by various human activities. The Forum covered the main problems that our oceans and seas are facing (i.e. overexploitation of resources and direct/indirect pollution).

The Senator and President of the Special Commission on Climate Change, Silvia Garza Galván, mentioned that public policy should be reviewed in relation to the marine spectrum and reworked to be properly understood by all.

It is important to take care of marine resources because they are directly related to climate change which is an urgent environmental threat. She said, “Take care and conserve the oceans, act to achieve sustainable development and [uphold] Paris agreement commitments.” It was amazing to see many ocean specialists such as Mario Gomez from Codemar, Maximiliano Bello from The Pew Charitable Trusts, Octavio Aburto from Mares Mexicanos, James Ketchum from Pelagios Kakunja, and many others sharing dialogue in order to strengthen the protection of Mexican seas.

This is why we need to take care of our oceans and choose sustainable fishes and ecoturism platforms to be part of the change.
