Today Tash, Martin, Al and myself had a very special encounter with a couple of Olive Ridley Turtles. We set out in the direction of Golden Gate a sand bank 20miles off shore, on our way Nedel the captain spotted something strange on the surface, we slowed down and approached with caution, it was two Olive Ridley turtles mating. There are 5 species of turtles that mate and lay eggs in Mexican waters and coasts, the Olive Ridley being the most common for this area. To see any animal in it most intimate behavior is an honor and a privilege to witness.
Everyone got their gear on and we slid slowly and quietly into the water, we approached the turtles with care and made sure we did not get too close as to bother them. We watched in awe for almost an hour, It is such an incredible feeling to know that we witness the growing population of these incredible marine creatures. Today was a very special day, not only the turtles, but we also got to witness the magic of the Mobulas and the incoming migration of humpback whales.
