As we were leaving the marina only just entering the bay, our Capitan Nedel spotted the first whale. This was already a sign that it was going to be a great day. Not long after we spotted a lot of splashing in the distance and decided to go check it out. It was five humpback whales cruising along the surface together displaying some social behavior. They were tail lobbing and fin slapping, moving slowly and staying close to the surface. There was a male and a female whale in the back of the group that were in a courting behavior, this was very exciting but we didn’t want to disturb too much, so we moved along to some dolphins not far away.
A pod of about 30 friendly bottle-nose dolphins was around the boat, so we jumped in the water. They were playful and interactive, suddenly we had a big surprise the 5 whales we had spotted earlier cruised by us, just a few meters away. the whales moved past us, watching us as we watched them, we could see every detail of the body and fins as the gracefully moved in the water. The dolphins were much more interested in the whales and swam away along side them, almost like they were leading them somewhere magical! It was an unforgettable moment and the reason we love the Pelagic Safari.
